In real estate, property and plot size are measured in terms of their area. The different units and metric system used to measure area are complicated and generate much difficulty for property buyers and investors.
Land Area Converter
This article explains some basic land area measurements and provides a land area calculator to ease area estimation.
Common Land Area Units
Some units in which land area is represented are discussed below:
Square foot:
A square foot refers to the area of land in the form of a square with each side measuring 1 foot. This unit is used to measure small land areas, such as those of houses and apartments.
Marla:
A marla is a conventional Pakistani unit used for small land areas and is often used interchangeably with sq ft
Marla to Square Foot
1 marla = 272.25 sq ft.
Calculation: Suppose you have 5 marla land and you want to convert it to sq ft you will simply divide the number of marlas by 22.25 sq ft
5 marla = 5x 272.25 = 1361.25 sq ft
And if you have an area in sq ft and want to know how many marlas you divide the total area in sq ft by 272.25
1361.25 sq ft = 1361.25 / 272.25 = 5 marlas.
Kanal:
Kanal is a larger unit equivalent to 20 marlas and is used for large commercial and residential properties.
Kanal and Marla
1 kanal is equal to 20 marlas
Calculation: If you want to know how many marlas are in 2 kanal land, you would multiply the number of kanals by 20. Here you would have 40 marla of land.
Acre
An acre is mostly used for large land areas such as that of Commercial, industrial, or agricultural lands. This unit is used internationally, along with its local use.
Acre and Marla
An acre is equal to 160 marlas
Calculation: if you have 4 acres of land, then in marlas ( 4 x 160) you would have 640 marlas of land.
Acre and Kanal
An acre is equal to 8 kanals
Calculation: Now, if you have 4 acres of land in kanals (4x 8), you would have 32 kanals of land.
Murraba
Murraba is mostly used for very large land areas, which are often agricultural lands. A murraba consists of 25 acres.
Murraba and Acre
A murraba is equal to 25 acres
Calculation: Let’s suppose you have a land of 5 murraba, then it means you have 125 acres of land ( 5x 25).
Here is a clear numerical table showing the relationship between all these land units:
| Unit | Square Feet (sq ft) | Marla | Kanal | Acre | Murabba |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Square Foot | 1 | – | – | – | – |
| 1 Marla | 272.25 | 1 | – | – | – |
| 1 Kanal | 5,445 | 20 | 1 | – | – |
| 1 Acre | 43,560 | 160 | 8 | 1 | – |
| 1 Murabba | 1,089,000 | 4,000 | 200 | 25 | 1 |
